LAdy with a fan

"Lady with a fan" is my first collection it is heavily inspired by a painting of the same name by Gustav Klimt. The painting was deeply inspired by the orientalism trend back at the time. This thus became the primary focus of the collection. As an Asian, I wanted to explore orientalism through an inverted lens. An Asian inspired by Western culture. Being a student who recently moved from Indonesia to Singapore, the concept allows me to explore Asian culture from different perspectives.

ROUGH MOODBOARD

SILHOUETTE

To get a clearer image of the silhouette of the outfit we practice drawing different shapes on a basic dress.

From this, I learn I prefer simpler shapes that highlight the women's body. Thee involves details such as hip cutouts and a laid back shoulder line

ROUGH sketches

Quick sketches were then made based on the moldboard main components and the silhouettes composed.

Three components were focused on when creating the shapes of the outfits. Firstly, I focused on the shapes of a fan since it is an integral fashion piece in both cultures, usually as a sign of status. This was shown through pleats, cutlines, cutouts, and the use of curves. The second is a component of flow. The flowers in the moldboard constantly remind me of the idea so I wanted garments that would drape nicely. Finally, as a celebration of feminity, I made sure the outfits all since the waist to show off the women's body.

fabrics and colors

After the outfit was picked, different color combinations were considered. Fabrics were also chosen as well as the finishing that will be used before the garment is made.

FINAL BOARDS

As this was my first design process, I created a rough moodboard to have a general direction of the collection. From this, I extracted mainly the patterns, colors, and a general feminine, whimsical style.
