the gift, the pain, the cycle
hojojutsu
Hojojutsu is a Japanese restraining method that reminds me of a Japanese fishing technique known as Ukai.
SUMI-E
Sumi-e is an accidental result for me. Originally I wanted to recreate the ripple effect of sumigashi however, I wasn't able to replicate it on Organza and it ended up looking like a Japanese ink painting.
NAMAZU
Namazu is a Japanese myth of a catfish that lives underground. When it moves it is believed to cause earthquakes. However, many people industry soon thrived as people needed reconstruction
The collection this semester is centered around “Japanese Fishermen”. The country has a coastline spanning over 18,480 miles, this means that virtually every part of the country is close to the sea. Naturally, Japan’s history is wrapped around the sea, from the building industry to artists creating artwork influenced by the sea. However, what interests me most is the exploration of Japan's relationship with the sea. Japan has built its industry based on fishing dating back to the 1700s. On the other hand, it has also become a source of remorse for them as Japan experienced a lot of earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis. I think this builds a relationship between giving and losing.
