IMPERFECT,
IMPERMANENT,
INCOMPLETE
“Imperfect, Impermanent, Incomplete” is a project based on the Japanese minimalist concept of wabi-sabi. Wabi-sabi aims to find the beauty in things that are imperfect and that nothing is ever complete or permanent . I find this concept interesting in contrast to fashion as everybody tries to create the next big thing whereas wabi-sabi embraces the simplicity and aknowledges that nothing will ever be perfect or finished but simply part of a thing that will come to pass. I also decided to use this theme as a means to reflect on myself during the covid period.

01
DECONSTRUCTION
As this project was based on imperfection, I was highly influenced by kintsugi. It is a Japanese art form of putting back broken glasses. I thought this could be applied to fashion by deconstructing old clothes and reassembling them to find a general direction for the collection.
02
Draping
As wabi-sabi values the beauty of simplicity, I tried to drape with simple shapes. The following image was made with 2 1x1 square calico. I wanted to see what kind of shape can be achieved with something that is considered simple.

03
DRAPING
I liked the design that the draping produced so I decided to do more. To create a natural feel, I decided to approach the drape as I go and improvise throughout the process.
